In in 2016, 37,461 drivers died in vehicle accidents across the US, while one state alone accounted for almost 10% of all crashes, the highest in the country.
Over 3,400 drivers in Texas died on the roads that year, more than any other state, and the 12th highest fatality rate per 100 million miles travelled, making Texas drivers some of the worst in the country.
So why are Texan drivers so terrible?
According to car crash attorney Ted B. Lyon & Associates, over 50% of accidents are due to “dangerous and completely unnecessary bad driver behaviours“.
These behaviours include drunk driving or driving under the influence (40%), driver inattention or distraction (11%) & illegal or unsafe travel speeds (10%).
A measure for driver ability is the number of deaths per 100 million miles travelled, with 1.43 deaths occurring per 100 million miles in Texas.
Car crash litigation is big business in Texas
“Wrongful death” settlements can be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, sometimes millions. Auto accident attorneys will charge between 25 to 40 percent of the settlement, averaging one third of the settlement.
With the average wrongful death resulting in a $1m settlement, attorneys are pocketing a whopping $1,246,080,000 ($1.246 billion) in fees.
