Avicii – 800 Shows, Booze, Drugs & Suicide

It has been confirmed that the icon of Swedish EDM,Tim Berling AKA Avicii, known for his 9 UK top 10 singles, and two Grammy Nominations, took his own life suddenly in Oman on Friday, April 20th. CNN has reported that two postmortems have been carried out in regard to his sudden passing and the police have confirmed that there is no criminal suspicion in the death.

In fact it was only today that the real cause of the DJ’s death was released with the DJ’s family releasing a pained statement –

Our beloved Tim was a seeker, a fragile artistic soul searching for answers to existential questions. An over-achieving perfectionist who travelled and worked hard at a pace that led to extreme stress.

When he stopped touring, he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most – music.

He really struggled with thoughts about Meaning, Life, Happiness.

He could not go on any longer.

He wanted to find peace. Tim was not made for the business machine he found himself in; he was a sensitive guy who loved his fans but shunned the spotlight.

Tim, you will forever be loved and sadly missed. The person you were and your music will keep your memory alive.

We love you,

Your family.

Breaking Point

Avicii’s choice to retire from touring reveals that as is the case with most young celebrities, Berling’s hectic schedule was taking a toll on his mental and physical health.

“There was never an end to the shows,” he said. “ I didn’t have time to give myself to properly stop, what I should have done was stop. Recover from the pain medicine and the illnesses, all the years of touring and the stress. But I kept going.”

From 2011, to 2014, Avicii was hospitalised numerous times and was even forced to cancel a string of shows in 2014, due to health concerns, primarily stemming from acute pancreatitis commonly caused due to high levels of alcohol intake, which Avicii reveals he fell into, mainly as a crutch to deal with the anxiety and lack of self-confidence.

Forced to take on over 800 shows in under 4 years, it is unsurprising that as documented in True Stories, Avicii was essentially filled up with a cocktail of drugs and pushed out into the arena again, just for that extra buck. And then, tragedy struck.
